When speaking about God, we must keep in mind that the Bible uses general and specific names to refer to Him. “God” isn’t a name, per sé, but rather a general term we use in English to speak about a transcendent Being or the Creator. In calling God “Lord” (Hebrew: Adonai), we are recognising God’s authority over us, but Lord is really more a title than a name. It is similar when we refer to God as our heavenly Father. That isn’t His name, but as a title it does represent something intimate about Him, while also defining our relationship to Him. He is our Father; we are His children.
