There is no deeper sadness than the idea or feeling that we are alone in the world – that we have no friend, that no one cares for us, that no one is concerned about what might happen to us, that no one would care if we were to die or shed a tear over our grave.

In Scripture, few felt loneliness more keenly than David. In a series of heartfelt, earnest appeals to God, he cried out in despair. His own son turned against him, the men of Israel pursued him, and he was forced to flee the city, leaving his home and family. Lonely and afflicted (Psa 25:16), his only recourse was to turn to God, pleading for mercy and intervention (Psa 25:21)…
